So you have made the decision to look for a new job! There are many different reasons why people decide to move on which would be a change of scenery, progression, company ethics etc… The first thing you need to do before making any applications is to ensure that your CV is completely up to date and is attractive to potential employers / recruiters.

We would like to take this opportunity to share with you a few tips for CV Writing and Making Job Applications.

2 Page Rule Myth:

The first rule of the “2 page rule” is to never use the 2 page rule… (unless of course you don’t have a lot of employment history!!)

We often hear “I read online about the 2 page rule” and “after I’ve written a personal profile,
included my skills and qualifications, I only have 1 page left for my employment history so had to cut my employment history out”

Your CV is usually the first thing that lands on the desk of an Employer / Recruiter, and is the very first introduction / impression of you. This is possibly the most crucial opportunity to get your foot in the door – so make it count!

Within the training industry it is crucial to include your proven experience depending on role; occupational competency, business development experience, management / senior level
experience undertaken.

By limiting your CV to just 2 pages you could be cutting out CRITICAL information that
Employers and Recruiters are looking for.

We don’t mean include waffle, diagrams or pie charts to make it extend to 6 pages. Your CV should be well detailed, punchy, include relevant areas of experience to match the role you are applying to etc.

If you’ve got it flaunt it!

Layout:

Unless you are applying for a snazzy IT or marketing design job, a basic word document without grids etc is a Recruiters dream come true.

Contact Details:

As silly as it sounds, a lot of CV’s that we come across don’t have any contact details on them. In order for an employer / recruiter to contact you regarding a role / application you should always include (Ideally at the top of your CV for ease); your Telephone Number, Email Address and where you currently live. (If you are not comfortable putting your full address on your CV, you can put your Town and Region, EG: Hednesford, Staffordshire).

Personal Profile:

A personal profile gives you an opportunity to show the employer / recruiter a little about you, a brief overview about your experience, your suitability for the role and any skills / achievements.

Work History:

We recommend that you all your relevant work history within the sector – you should always
include all your relevant work history; Where you have worked, when you worked there (months and years), Job Title and your key responsibilities.

If you are applying for Assessor / Internal Verifier / Tutor vacancies, you should always ensure that you show your occupational competency for the sectors that you are delivering in.

For example; If you are a Health and Social Care Assessor (trainee or qualified), it is essential that you list your occupational experience within Care which allows you to assess H&SC
qualifications.

Relevant Qualifications:

Start with your most recent education and work your way back. You should include the date that your qualification was achieved, what the full name of the qualification is and the provider that you completed your qualification through. Make it clear if you are still working towards a qualification.

Any additional information:

This section allows you to inform the employer / recruiter if you are a car owner / driver, if you have a current DBS check, if you hold any relevant memberships etc…
